The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Peter O. Olapegba, has called for the support of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments to reopen the UI Heritage Museum, emphasizing the university's commitment to preserving tradition and heritage.

Professor Olapegba made this appeal on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, during a courtesy visit by Mrs. Oluyomi Pamela Otuka, the Deputy Director of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Ibadan Office. The visit aimed to discuss strategies to revive the UI Museum, which houses a rich collection of priceless artifacts.

Highlighting the importance of heritage preservation, Professor Olapegba stated, "The University places priority on tradition and heritage," affirming plans to establish a proper Museum that would showcase the institution's cultural treasures with pride. He emphasized UI's substantial investment in preserving its artifacts and underscored the university's commitment to ensuring these efforts do not diminish.

Mrs. Otuka, who also serves as the Curator of the Ibadan Museum of Unity, expressed concern over the current state of the UI Museum, noting its significant collection of artifacts. She lamented that some of these historical items were kept locked away, risking deterioration and potential loss of cultural history.

"We need to keep the artifacts for posterity to educate and enlighten the coming generations," Mrs. Otuka emphasized, advocating for the refurbishment, conservation, and reopening of the UI Museum to the public.
