UNILAG Don, Dr. Ifeoma Amobi, to Serve as 2024 African Fact-Checking Awards Judge for the Fifth Consecutive Year

Dr. Ifeoma Theresa Amobi, an Associate Professor of Communication and acting Director of the Southwest Academic Publishing Centre at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has been selected to serve as a judge for the 2024 African Fact-Checking Awards. This marks her fifth consecutive year on the judging panel, highlighting her consistent dedication to promoting accurate journalism.

Dr. Amobi stands as the sole Nigerian representative among the panel of distinguished judges. She will be collaborating with notable colleagues, including Prof. Laeed Zaghlami from the University of Algiers, Prof. Roukaya Kassenally from the University of Mauritius, Prof. Peter Kimani, an award-winning journalist and Professor of Practice at the School of Media and Communication, Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya, Rosemary Ajayi, a misinformation expert and Founder/Lead Researcher at the Digital Africa Research Lab in the UK, and Prof. Audrey Gadzekpo from the Department of Communication Studies at the University of Ghana.

The panel will be tasked with evaluating submissions and selecting winners for this year’s edition of the African Fact-Checking Awards, which celebrates excellence in fact-checking journalism across African media.

Submission Guidelines for the 11th Edition of the Awards:

  • Entries must have been first published or broadcast between July 1, 2023, and July 14, 2024.
  • The fact-check should address claims related to significant issues originating in or relevant to Africa, determining their accuracy.

Dr. Amobi’s research interests include Online and Multimedia Journalism, Health Communication, Information Disorder (encompassing Misinformation, Disinformation, and Conspiracy Theories), Media and Gender, and Nollywood. She is also a member of the Media Advisory Group of Africa Check, Full Fact, and Chequeado fact-checking organizations, and a Senior Fellow and Council member of the Nigeria Institute of Social Media Analysts.
