On Thursday, September 5, 2024, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) welcomed a delegation of officials from the World Bank, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and the Federal Ministry of Finance. The officials visited the university to review the progress of the Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards Enhancement (UNILAG-SPESSECE).

During the visit, Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, reaffirmed UNILAG’s dedication to the vision of UNILAG-SPESSECE. She highlighted the centre’s goals of achieving national and continental leadership in human capital development, cutting-edge research, and policy development. The centre also aims to implement sustainable Procurement, Environment, and Social Standards (PES) to support the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Professor Ogunsola expressed gratitude to the visiting officials for their ongoing support and collaboration with UNILAG-SPESSECE. She emphasized that their backing has been a significant motivator for the centre as it strives to fulfill its mandate. The Vice-Chancellor also underscored UNILAG’s commitment to virtual learning, recognizing its importance in the future of education, particularly in light of technological advancements.

In their remarks, Dr. Joshua Attah, Project Coordinator at the NUC, and Mr. Siddique Ishtiak, Lead Procurement Specialist at the World Bank, praised UNILAG for its effective management of the centre and the achievements made thus far. Dr. Attah encouraged the university management to continue developing the UNILAG-SPESSECE to further its impact and reach.

The visit marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between UNILAG and its partners, reinforcing the university’s role in advancing sustainable educational practices and standards.
