Dr. Khadijat Abdulhamid Abdulkareem, Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), has emphasized the importance of tree planting in maintaining a healthy ecosystem, improving public health, and promoting community well-being.
Trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and provide food and shelter for wildlife, with a single tree capable of removing up to 2,000 tons of air pollution.
Dr. Abdulkareem noted that deforestation and poor tree coverage contribute to lower oxygen levels, reduced food security, soil erosion, and increased physical and mental health issues.
-She urged Nigerians to cultivate a culture of responsible tree planting, recommending that multiple trees be planted for every tree cut down to maintain ecological balance.
Dr. Abdulkareem cited Islamic and Christian traditions that encourage environmental stewardship, quoting a Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) that highlights the ongoing rewards of planting trees even after death.
Dr. Abdulkareem stressed that tree planting should be a personal and communal responsibility, encouraging both farmers and non-farmers to participate in green initiatives to mitigate the effects of climate change.
