UNILORIN Emerges Victorious at All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has once again showcased its debating prowess by emerging as champions at the All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship held at Veritas University, Abuja, on September 14, 2024. The impressive performance earned accolades from the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.

During a reception on September 19, 2024, for members of the UNILORIN Quiz, Debate, and Innovation Committee, Prof. Egbewole praised the team for their outstanding achievements. "It is no coincidence that we achieved this feat at the 11th edition of the competition during the tenure of the 11th Vice-Chancellor," he remarked, highlighting the significance of their victory.

Team Success and Individual Honors

The UNILORIN team excelled in multiple categories, with standout performances including:

- Champions in the Open Category: Olafisoye Tolulope Alexander (400-level, Common Law) and Owolabi Victor Oluwatobi (400-level, Science Education).

- Finalists: Tivlumun Sesugh Alexander (200-level, Information Technology) and Oderanti Joshua Olamilekan (400-level, Science Education).

- Semi-finalists: Adetunji Tesleem Oluwakayode (400-level, Medical Laboratory Science) and Abdullahi Hassanah Maimako (400-level, Microbiology).

In individual awards:

- 2nd Best New Speaker: Anjorin Teminijesu Success (200-level, Microbiology).

- 2nd Best Speaker: Owolabi Victor Oluwatobi (400-level, Science Education).

- Best New Judge: Akinjayeju Mitchell Temitope (200-level, Microbiology).

A Commitment to Excellence

The Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alex Morenikeji Akanmu, emphasized the university's longstanding tradition of excellence in debates. He expressed pride in the Vice-Chancellor's foundational role in establishing debating at UNILORIN, stating, "It is a thing of joy that as Vice-Chancellor, even more laurels are being added to the institution’s name."

Dr. Oluyinka Ajibola Iyiola, Coordinator of the UNILORIN Quiz, Debate, and Innovation Committee, reaffirmed the team's commitment to excellence and promised to continue making the university proud.

The reception concluded with the Vice-Chancellor encouraging the team to maintain their momentum, urging them to strive for even greater heights in future competitions. Joining the Vice-Chancellor were key university officials, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Suleiman Folorunsho Ambali, and the University Registrar, Mr. Mansur Adeleke Alfanla.
