UNIMAID VC Advocates for Environmental-Specific Medical Training as NPMCN Begins Accreditation
The Vice Chancellor University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele stated that, the core purpose of education is to solve problems and emphasized the importance of primary healthcare and the need to design and customize academic courses to suit the realities of the environment and the communities they are meant to serve.
He stated this when the National Postgraduates Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) paid him a visit on 3rd February 2026.
The representative of the Vice chancellor, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Services), Professor Mohammed Ahmed Waziri in his remarks stressed that Family Medicine should be fully incorporated into the University training, as it plays a vital role in serving community problems.
The Vice Chancellor further called on the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to take the lead in developing clear policies on family medicine, which would enable the Federal Government to implement and support such initiatives nationwide.
He then assured the delegation that the team would be guided through the faculty and granted access to all relevant facilities and documents needed for the accreditation exercise.
The Team Lead of the Accreditation team, who is also the chairman of the National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) Dr. Fatai Olanyan, in his remarks, pointed out that the purpose of the visit is to assess the University's medical programmes and facilities, adding that there is a strong need to integrate Family Medicine into undergraduate training in nigerian universities, as it is an important step towards strengthening medical training.
He further added that family medicine focuses on comprehensive patients' content care and plays a key role in building a resilient health system. He then expressed his gratitude to the University Management for the hospitality and cooperation.
