UNIPORT Dissolves SUG Executive, Sets Up Electoral Committee for Fresh Union Election

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has dissolved the Students’ Union Government (SUG) executive and inaugurated an Electoral and Administrative Committee (ELECO) to oversee the affairs of the union and conduct the 2025/2026 Students’ Union Government elections.

The development was announced in a public notice issued by the Electoral and Administrative Committee on July 20, 2026, following the approval of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chike Princewill R. Chike.

According to the committee, the ELECO has been mandated to ensure a free, fair, peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process that reflects the genuine choice of students.

The committee further directed all former SUG executives to immediately hand over all union properties, including office keys, official documents, records, and other materials belonging to the Students’ Union.

It urged members of the university community to remain calm, law-abiding, and focused on their academic activities while awaiting the release of the official election timetable and other electoral guidelines.

The inauguration of the ELECO is aimed at facilitating a smooth transition and ensuring the restoration of an effective and representative Students’ Union leadership at the institution.
