UNIZIK Calculation Formula for the Admission Screening Exercise - 2023/2024

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) is known for its commitment to a transparent and fair admission process. In the quest to maintain the highest standards of integrity, the university has introduced a new and automated grading system for the 2023/2024 admission exercise, which includes Post-UTME, Direct Entry, and other relevant screening examinations. This system ensures that each candidate is evaluated fairly and consistently, using a specific calculation formula.

In an announcement made on the 16th of October, 2023, the university shared details about the admission screening exercise and how candidates' O' level and UTME results would be graded. Candidates aspiring to join the UNIZIK community are advised to upload their O' level results to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) Portal. This step is crucial for consideration in the 2023/2024 admission exercise.

For UTME candidates, the screening process involves a combination of their UTME scores and O' level results for the four subjects they took in the UTME. The grading formula for this includes several factors: The ratio used for the calculation is 70:30, meaning 70% of the total score is based on the UTME score, while the remaining 30% comes from the O' level subject scores. In numerical terms, this translates to 0.7 for UTME scores and 0.3 for O' level subject scores. Ranking of O' Level Results Scores:** O' level results are ranked based on the grades obtained. For instance, an A1 grade is equivalent to 90 points, while a B2 is 80 points, and so on. Grades F9 and Awaiting Result (AR) are scored as 0 points.

Candidates who achieved all four O' level subjects in a single sitting receive a bonus of 10 points, while those who did so in two sittings do not receive any bonus (bonus = 0). The final screening score is calculated using the following formula, Final Score = (UTME Score x 0.7) + [(O' Level Score + Bonus) x 0.3]. The score is calculated differently for candidates who completed their O' level subjects in a single sitting compared to those who did so in two sittings. As evident from the calculations, candidates who complete their O' level subjects in a single sitting and receive a bonus have an advantage. In this example, there's a difference of 3 points between the final screening scores of a candidate who credited all subjects in one sitting compared to someone who did so in two sittings.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University's introduction of this automated grading system aims to ensure a fair, consistent, and transparent admission process for all candidates. This approach not only values excellence but also considers the individual circumstances of candidates, providing a level playing field for all applicants. With this innovative formula, UNIZIK continues to maintain its commitment to providing quality education and embracing technological advancements in its admission process. Aspiring students are encouraged to adhere to these guidelines to secure their place in the 2023/2024 academic year.
