The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar(Unical), Prof. Florence Obi has described the institution’s Alumni Association as ‘critical stakeholders’ of the University, saying their contributions to the development of the institution is phenomenal.

Prof. Florence Obi stated this at the Council Chamber of the institution when she received the National Executive Council and some State chapter officials  of the Unical Alumni Association who paid a courtesy call to her office recently.

She said over the years,  the Unical Alumni Association have demonstrated great capacity and support for the development of the institution, adding that, they are instrumental to the achievements recorded by the current administration.

While thanking them for always making themselves available whenever the institution needs their services, Prof. Obi bemoaned the negative publicity against the institution on social media, saying it impinges on the integrity of the institution’s alumni who are graduates of the University.

Prof. Florence Obi further informed that, despite the danger the social media poses, her administration is focused on administering good leadership for the best interest of all, noting that, a lot of positives have been achieved under watch.

To this end, she expressed hope that the ongoing accreditation exercise in some Faculties and Departments of the institution will come in a good light.

This is even as she explained that a lot has been done to reposition the transcript Unit of the University for utmost performance.

According to her, the transcript unit is being digitized to avoid what used to be the norm adding that the incoming students and those who have graduated in the last three years from the University would benefit from the digitization process when completed.

For cordial communication between the Alumni Directorate and Alumni Relations of the University, the Vice Chancellor said she has set machinery in motion  to foster progress and synergy between them.

Prof Obi who used the occasion to formally inform the Alumni body that the University has won the right to host the 2026 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) after 33 years,  stated that preparations for the successful hosting of the event are in top gear.

 

While expressing joy about hosting the NUGA 2026, she called on members of the Alumni body to support the course of hosting the long-awaited but priceless tournament.

Earlier, the National President of the University of Calabar Alumni, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu said their visit was premised on the Alumni preparation towards their Annual General Meeting and its first Homecoming that is billed for the first quarter of 2024.

Prof. Ochefu  who commended the Vice Chancellor for her sterling leadership towards the development of the University noted that Alumni of the Institution across the globe are keen to know about the day-to-day affairs of their Alma mater.

Re-echoing the Vice Chancellor’s stance on the need for a strong synergy between the Directorate of Alumni Affairs and Alumni Relations, the Alumni National President said efforts should be intensified in that regard to boost alumni activities.

He said despite the successes recorded in the transcript Unit of the University, more work needs to be done to ensure the swift processing of students' transcripts, noting that, there are still complaints about the processing of students' transcripts from some members of the Alumni.

While expressing his displeasure over the kidnap of one of the institution’s Professor and other cases of insecurity on campus, the Alumni President charged the University Management to ensure adequate security on campus.

This even as he commiserated with the Vice Chancellor on behalf of the Alumni body over the death of her staff, the late Prof. Stella Effa Attoe, a former Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Also Speaking, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees(BOT) of the University of Calabar Alumni, Rt. Hon. Bright Omokhodion appreciated the Vice Chancellor for her commitment to repositioning the institution to an enviable height.

He said the way the Prof. Obi-led administration has handled challenges confronting the University is highly commendable.
