Elmo Desilva, a 45-year-old African American man from Clarkston, Georgia, has accomplished a significant milestone by graduating from DeKalb County High School after years of dedicated service as the school's janitor.

Desilva, who worked as a custodian at DeKalb County High School, harbored a long-standing aspiration to become the head custodian. However, this goal required him to obtain a high school diploma. Hindered by an unstable living situation during his teenage years and the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings, Desilva faced challenges that led to him postponing his education.

“It wasn’t easy. It was a struggle for a while. But looking back, I am very proud,” he reflected on his journey.

Despite the difficulties, Desilva's potential was recognized by the school principal, Stephanie Brown-Bryant. She encouraged him to enroll in the DeKalb County Adult Education Program, emphasizing the positive impact of educational opportunities on both staff members and the school as a whole.

“By having our staff members equipped with educational opportunities it lends itself to growth. Not just for them but for our school,” said Brown-Bryant.

After nearly six months of attending night classes twice a week, Desilva successfully received his high school diploma, joining 46 other adults honored at a graduation ceremony organized by the school district.

“I hate to fail at something. I didn’t want to start and not finish. I didn’t want to disappoint my boss,” Desilva expressed his determination.

With his high school diploma in hand, Desilva is now poised for professional growth. The achievement opens the door for potential promotion to head custodian, allowing him to better provide for his family, plan for retirement, and explore further opportunities in his career.
