ABU Confers Honorary Doctorate on WTO DG Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; Becomes 115th Recipient in Institutional History

The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has officially conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree (Honoris Causa) on the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, GCON.

The ceremony, held during the university’s 45th Convocation on Saturday, 31st January 2026, cements Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s place as the 115th recipient of the institution's highest honour since its inception 63 years ago.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed lauded Dr. Okonjo-Iweala for her "exceptional contributions to national and global developments." As the first woman and first African to lead the WTO, and a former two-time Finance Minister of Nigeria, her recognition was based on her unwavering commitment to economic governance, public service, and integrity.

While the award was originally approved for 2025, the official conferment took place this year following her previous inability to attend due to pressing international engagements.Joining the Ranks of Global Icons

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala joins an elite roster of ABU honorary degree recipients that includes some of the world's most influential figures. The university’s historical list, which dates back to November 21, 1963, includes:
