ABU Scientists Achieve Breakthrough in Upgrading ShikaBrown Chicken Breed

Researchers at the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) of Ahmadu Bello University have successfully upgraded the ShikaBrown chicken breed, enabling it to lay 350-380 eggs per 90-week life cycle.

The upgrade is a result of NAPRI's breeding program, which aimed to improve the breed's traits for better performance and economic expansion. The program was initiated in response to Nigeria's population prediction for 2050, which emphasizes the need for increased food production.

According to Dr. Idris Abdullahi, Head of Poultry Research Programme, the upgrade will provide existing hatcheries and breeding farms with high-performing and resilient parent stock layer chickens. This will lead to increased egg production, improved nutrition, and job creation.

The upgrade is also expected to reduce the country's reliance on imported parent stock, thereby conserving foreign exchange. Additionally, the program has developed a broiler foundation, which focuses on creating a line of broilers that can thrive in Nigeria's challenging environmental conditions.
