In a bid to promote environmental sustainability and climate justice, Adamawa Activist for Climate Justice, in collaboration with Mara Regreen Initiative and Dadah Foundation Educational Empowerment (DAFEE), organized a tree presentation and sensitization program at General Murtala Mohammed College (GMMC), Yola. The event marked the 2024 World Environment Day celebration in Adamawa State's capital.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Aliyu Abubakar Jada, represented by the Director of Climate Change in the Ministry, Musa Usman, praised the initiative, noting its alignment with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri's policies against deforestation. Usman emphasized that the state government is committed to reducing climate injustice through actionable measures, including enforcing policies to curb the indiscriminate cutting of trees for charcoal production.
Addressing the gathering, Musa Usman highlighted the government's "Fresh-Air" initiative, which prioritizes environmental protection and climate resilience. He reiterated the Governor's executive order prohibiting tree felling in Adamawa State and urged residents to cultivate a culture of tree planting rather than destruction.
"The government cannot stop people from cutting down trees without providing alternative solutions," he noted. He disclosed plans to provide palliatives, including efficient energy sources for cooking, to reduce dependency on wood for fuel.
Usman further called for vigilance against the harmful activities of foreign elements impacting local flora and fauna, urging stakeholders to unite in restoring the environment and combating climate injustice.
The event served as a platform to educate secondary school students about the importance of environmental conservation and the need for proactive measures to mitigate climate change impacts in Adamawa State.
