Ahmadu Bello University Partners with UNICEF on Tree Planting, Waste Recycling Initiative
Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched an environmental initiative focused on tree planting, waste recycling, and sustainable practices to combat climate change.

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), has launched an initiative on tree planting, waste recycling, and sustainable environmental practices to mitigate climate change within the university environment.
The initiative was introduced during a workshop held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Abdullahi Smith Lecture Theatre, Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria. The workshop provided students with insights into the importance of environmental conservation and their role in addressing climate change.
Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Sahalu B. Junaidu, who also serves as the Dean of the Students Affairs Division, emphasized UNICEF’s ‘Green Rising’ project, which specifically targets students. He noted that ABU has a long-standing tradition of tree planting, making it an ideal institution for the initiative. Under the program, 2,800 trees will be planted, with 100 student volunteers participating in planting activities twice a week.
Prof. Junaidu expressed gratitude to UNICEF for bringing the program to the university and encouraged students to actively engage in the initiative.
Speaking at the event, UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist, Mrs. Theresa K. Pamma, highlighted that youths represent the largest demographic affected by climate change, making their involvement crucial. She stated that climate change is a pressing issue in Nigeria, and this initiative serves as a call to action for students as future leaders. She further praised ABU’s track record in afforestation efforts, acknowledging its planting of over five million trees.
The workshop featured various expert presentations on tree planting, waste recycling, and environmental management. In his paper titled “Seedling Production and Nurturing of Plantation,” Prof. Bashir Yusuf Abubakar of the Department of Botany explained the process of establishing and managing tree nurseries. He highlighted factors such as reliable water supply, soil quality, and planting materials as crucial for nursery success.
Prof. Umar Ahmad of the Department of Community Medicine, represented by Dr. Olasinde Abdulazeez Ayodeji, delivered a lecture on “Recycling of Waste.” He underscored the significance of proper waste management in reducing health hazards and environmental pollution. According to him, improper disposal of solid waste remains a major challenge in many societies, and recycling plays a vital role in addressing this issue.
Dr. S.K Musa of the University Health Services discussed the “Health Benefits of Trees to Humans and the Environment,” emphasizing their role in purifying air, reducing stress, controlling temperature, providing medicinal value, and minimizing noise pollution.
Additionally, the Acting Chief Security Officer of ABU, Malam Ashiru T. Zango, spoke on the “Role of Forest Guards in Securing Forests.” He explained that forest guards play a vital role in preventing illegal activities such as encroachment and contribute to the conservation of flora and fauna.
The workshop served as a significant step in fostering environmental awareness and sustainability efforts within Ahmadu Bello University. With continued collaboration between ABU and UNICEF, the institution aims to lead by example in addressing climate change challenges through proactive and practical solutions.
