Ahmadu Bello University’s NAPRI to Complete Kano Seed Multiplication Project
The project aims to establish and maintain a pasture seed multiplication plot in Dudduru, Ajingi Local Government Area, Kano State.
The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) of Ahmadu Bello University will conclude its work on the 20-hectare pasture seed multiplication plot in Kano State by December 2024.
This project, part of the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, commenced in January 2021 and was initially scheduled for completion in September this year. However, the Kano State Agricultural Development Project (KSADP) requested an extension, pushing the deadline to December 2024.
The project aims to establish and maintain a pasture seed multiplication plot in Dudduru, Ajingi Local Government Area, Kano State. The harvested pasture seeds will be used to establish grazing reserves in Dansoshai, addressing acute feed scarcity for ruminant livestock and reducing conflicts between farmers and herders.
The project’s scope includes site mobilization, fencing of 20 hectares, construction of 40 tube wells, two security rooms, and two storage facilities for seeds and equipment. It also covers the construction of a seed drying shade, land clearing, routine pasture management, and harvesting of key plant species such as gamba, stylo, and napier.
NAPRI’s Executive Director, Prof. Mohammed Rabiu Hassan, expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government and the Islamic Development Bank for entrusting NAPRI with the project. He also acknowledged the support of the KSADP staff, community leaders, security personnel, and the management of Ahmadu Bello University for their contributions to the project’s success.
The project was officially handed over to NAPRI on January 7, 2021, during a ceremony attended by all key stakeholders.
