ASUU Honours Outgoing FULafia Vice-Chancellor, Commends Democratic Leadership and Welfare Reforms

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) Branch, has lauded the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, for what it described as a humane, reform-oriented and inclusive style of administration.

The commendation was delivered during a special valedictory congress organised by ASUU in honour of the outgoing vice-chancellor.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of ASUU, FULafia Branch, Dr Sunday Orinya, described Professor Abdul Rahman as a dependable ally of academic staff who consistently upheld the core values and principles of the union.

According to Orinya, the vice-chancellor implemented key reforms that eased restrictive policies, reinstated postgraduate teaching allowances, expanded access to sabbatical and study leave, and ensured timely promotion of staff without resorting to industrial action.

He further noted that democratic governance within the university was strengthened under Abdul Rahman’s leadership, particularly through the institutionalisation of elective processes for positions such as deans.

Delivering a guest lecture at the congress, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, FULafia, Professor George Genyi, described the occasion as historic, noting that the university was the first among its peers to honour a vice-chancellor in such a manner.

Other ASUU leaders at the event also commended Abdul Rahman’s commitment to dialogue, staff welfare, innovation and academic excellence, while urging the university management to sustain and build upon the legacy of his administration.
