ASUU UNICROSS Cooperative Holds AGM, Elects New Leaders

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Limited, University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Chapter, has concluded its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Calabar Campus of the institution, culminating in the election of a new executive team.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Limited, University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) Chapter, has concluded its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Calabar Campus of the institution, culminating in the election of a new executive team.

In his address, outgoing President, Engr. Prof. Eko James Akpama, welcomed cooperators and highlighted challenges faced during the fiscal year, including non-remittance of funds, loan defaults, and non-payment of dues. Despite these setbacks, he noted that the cooperative was able to strengthen its financial base, increase membership, and deliver on its mandate. He commended the administration of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, for facilitating increased subvention to the university through the support of the Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and encouraged members to prioritize savings over luxury in preparation for retirement.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Stella-Maris Okey, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), expressed pride in the cooperative’s achievements and assured that the management would address issues of indebtedness after the forthcoming National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Exercise. She urged non-cooperating ASUU members to join the society and praised its leadership.

The Chairman of ASUU UNICROSS Chapter, Comrade Dr. Patrick Ushie, welcomed members to the AGM, appreciated management’s promise to offset debts owed to ASUU, and reaffirmed commitment to the union’s proposed secretariat building plan. He disclosed that the land acquired by ASUU would serve both the Union and the Cooperative, and advised the new leadership to work towards expanding membership for greater success.

The AGM concluded with the election of new officers:

  1. President – Dr. Victor Okpashi
  2. Vice President – Dr. Charles Odumusor
  3. Treasurer – Dr. (Mrs.) Rose Ayestung
  4. Financial Secretary – Dr. David Eyam

The event was well attended by stakeholders and guests, who were treated to a buffet reception.
