ATBU Engineering Student Develops NHED Smart Glove To Translate Sign Language Into Speech

Muhammad Habib Husaini, an engineering student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi, has developed the NHED Smart Glove, an innovative wearable device designed to translate sign language into spoken words in real time.

Built entirely from scratch using locally sourced components, the glove integrates pressure sensors and an ESP32 microcontroller to detect hand gestures and convert them into audio. The innovation aims to help people with speech impairments communicate more easily and independently.

Habib disclosed that the idea for the device was inspired by his younger sister, who is unable to speak. Motivated by the communication challenges she faces, he set out to create an affordable, locally made solution that bridges communication gaps for persons with disabilities.
