Babcock University's Best Graduating Student Oluwapelumi Oluwatobiloba Amosu Earns 4.96 CGPA, Wins ₦10 Million Excellence Award

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu challenged 3,521 Babcock University graduates to embrace innovation and solve societal problems as the university celebrated 306 First-Class graduates and global academic achievements.

Sanwo-Olu who spoke as the Commencement Speaker at the 24th Babcock University undergraduates convocation, challenged the graduates to use their university education to fire different innovations to solve societal problems.

The university graduated 3,521 out of which 306 obtained First Class. The overall best graduating student, Oluwapelumi Oluwatobiloba Amosu of the Department of Economics obtained Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.96.

She was honoured for excellence in leadership, academics, community and spiritual service, and received multiple awards including the President’s award, Senior Vice President’s award for the highest CGPA at undergraduate level, the Professors Ademola and Grace Tayo award for excellence in character, leadership and academics, and the Sunbeth Execellence Partnership Program (SEPP) award of N10 million, among others.

Other recipients of the Senior Vice President’s award were Toyin Ezekiel Olalere of the undergraduate part-time programme with a CGPA of 4.56, and Olamide Babatunde Raheem of BUCODel with a CGPA of 4.92.

In his addressing, Vice Chancellor of BU, Prof. Olutunde Ojewole, said the graduates have proven that Babcock education has reflected in their competence, character and conviction.

The governor said the nation needs their ideas to solve societal challenges and urged them to wake up and that the future is in their hands.

His words: “I know many of you are anxious to know what awaits you in the society. Get used to trial and failure. Don’t be disappointed when you fail for the first time.

“When you try and fail, try again to succeed. Don’t assume you know it all. You must get up when you fail. Always press ahead to achieve your goal.”

Ojewole disclosed that the achievements recorded by BU are fruits of collective vision, shared sacrifice and a community united by a common purpose.

He said within eight months, BU welcomed accreditation teams from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and professional regulatory bodies, adding, “their positive assessments affirm that our investment in quality assurance, infrastructure and academic excellence is yielding tangible results.”

The VC revealed that the School of Law and Security Studies secured an increase in its admission quota from 100 to 160 students, stating it is a strong vote of confidence in the quality of legal education at Babcock University.”

Ojewole said 13 programmes received re-accreditation, while 27 new courses were presented to the commission.

“Our students continue to demonstrate that excellence knows no borders. Nine of our graduates earned First Class honours at the Nigerian Law School final Bar Examination. He described the performance as one of the highest by any university in the country.

According to him, the five pillars of his vision (GRACE) aligned with the BU 2025-2030 Strategic Development Blueprint.

“The achievements I presented today are therefore not isolated accomplishments. They are evidence that the GRACE agenda is taking shape. They represent the first visible fruits of a journey that we believe will position Babcock University among Africa’s most respected faith-based universities and one of the World’s leading centres for holistic education,” he stated.

Ojewole observed that the BU inclusion in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University rankings marks an important institutional achievement.

The VC further revealed that nationally, BU is placed joint 11th among Nigeria’s 24 ranked universities, confirming that the institution is now visible on the global higher education landscape.

He assured that the university would continue to invest in research infrastructure, strengthen postgraduate education, pursue access to research grants, deepen international collaboration and encourage multidisciplinary inquiry.

In his remarks, Chancellor of BU, Professor Bassey Udoh, commended the Federal Government, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, members of staff, alumni, parents and development partners for their support towards the university’s growth.

Udoh adivsed the graduates to uphold integrity, embrace lifelong learning and see graduation as the beginning of greater responsibility rather than the end of education.

Amosu attributed her academic success to consistency and discipline, adding, “think of excellence not as one extraordinary thing, but as tiny ordinary decisions made every day. It’s not that one day you wake up and you’ll be able to pull off a 24-hour reading binge. You just have to be
