In a recent update, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the release of 59 students who were detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday. However, the authorities have decided to continue detaining ten of the students due to the serious nature of the alleged offenses they are facing.

Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the school's Public Relations Officer, provided this confirmation during a conversation with THE WHISTLER on Wednesday night. He mentioned, "We are on our way back to Ile-Ife from Ibadan. They have released the students to us but they are still detaining 10 of them on the grounds that they have strong cases to answer. We will release the details tomorrow. Thanks."

Earlier in the day, the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC reported that its operatives had arrested 69 individuals suspected of being involved in internet fraud in Ile-Ife, Osun.

According to Dele Oyewale, EFCC's Head of Media and Publicity, the arrests were made based on "actionable intelligence on their suspected involvement in fraudulent internet-related activities." Oyewale also noted that credible intelligence had linked the Oduduwa Estate area of Ile-Ife to the activities of suspected internet fraudsters.

Among the items recovered from the suspects were exotic cars, 190 mobile phones, 40 laptops, and more. Oyewale stated, "The suspects have made useful statements to the EFCC and will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded."

The OAU students were reportedly apprehended during a late-night raid on off-campus hostels situated at the Oduduwa Estate in Ile-Ife during the early hours of Wednesday.

This incident prompted a large group of OAU students to protest at the Ibadan Zonal Command office, demanding the release of their detained colleagues. The students arrived at the EFCC office in six buses and were led by some leaders of the university's Students Union Government (SUG).
