BUK 54th Professorial Inaugural Lecture: Sports as a Key to Longevity and Wellbeing

Renowned sports administrator and scholar, Professor Lawal Yazid Ibrahim, has emphasized the role of sports in promoting longevity and wellbeing. Delivering the 54th Professorial Inaugural Lecture on March 27, 2025, at the Convocation Arena, New Campus, Professor Yazid explored the evolution of sports and its impact on fitness and overall health.
He classified sports based on aggression levels, differentiating between naturally aggressive sports like boxing and karate, and behaviorally aggressive sports such as rugby and American football. The lecturer also drew connections between sportsmanship and military strategy, examining the etymology of the word "war".
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) Professor Haruna Aliyu, commended the lecturer and encouraged other academic staff to engage in inaugural lectures as a testament to their research contributions.
