BUK Joins Forces with Society of Petroleum Engineers to Power Nigeria's Energy Future

Bayero University Kano (BUK) is forging a strategic partnership with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) to confront Nigeria's pressing energy challenges. The announcement was made by BUK Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu, during the SPE Africa 2025 Annual Student Congress held in Kano.
The conference which took place on Thursday, 3rd April, 2025 at Dangote Business School with the theme "Building the Energy Workforce of Tomorrow: Insight on Innovation, Technology and Talent Development," the congress focuses on equipping students with the skills and expertise needed to address key energy issues.
As part of its efforts, the SPE Nigeria Council is organizing the Africa Energy Challenge 2025 a competitive platform emphasizing energy accessibility, security, and sustainability.
Represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Haruna Musa, the Vice Chancellor noted that the collaboration will engage students in petroleum engineering research tailored to Nigeria's unique development needs. He also expressed appreciation to SPE for selecting BUK as the host of the first-ever SPE Annual Congress in Nigeria.
Amina Danmadami, emphasized the significance of the event, stating that its inaugural hosting in Nigeria is a milestone for the organization. She highlighted that BUK was deliberately chosen for its stature as a leading academic institution in the country. Dr. Danmadami also praised the university's warm hospitality, describing it as unmatched.
In his remarks, Dr. Riverson Oppong, SPE's African Regional Director, underscored the global reach of the organization, which spans over 80 countries. He emphasized Africa's vast reservoir of talent, innovation, and energy potential, noting that these assets can play a transformative role on the global stage.
The Africa Energy Challenge will culminate in the selection of five outstanding student teams from various universities, who will represent the continent at an international level.
One of the hopeful participants, Oteng Kenneth from Miles and Technology University, Ghana, shared his enthusiasm and confidence about advancing to the global competition.
This groundbreaking partnership marks a pivotal move in addressing Nigeria's energy concerns and reinforces BUK's dedication to fostering innovation and nurturing talent in the energy sector.
