BUK Renowned Economist Prof. Ahmad Muhammad Tsauni Calls for Shift in Nigeria Economic Strategy
Professor Ahmad Muhammad Tsauni, a distinguished economist, delivered the 51st Professorial Inaugural Lecture at Bayero University, Kano, titled "Economic Progress on a Tightrope."
The lecture emphasized the need for Nigeria to reassess its economic trajectory and adopt a more sustainable and inclusive approach to growth.
Professor Tsauni argued that Nigeria's over-reliance on the "Washington Consensus" model of economic growth, which emphasizes free market principles and minimal government intervention, has hindered the country's development. He cited the success of countries like China, Malaysia, and Singapore, which have departed from this model and implemented market-system adjusted reforms.
The economist stressed that Nigeria must adopt a new approach, focusing on enhancing capital formation, boosting domestic savings, and promoting innovation and entrepreneurship. He also emphasized the importance of human capital development, infrastructure growth, and institutional reforms.
Professor Tsauni's lecture was well-received by the audience, comprising academics, policymakers, and students. His call for a paradigm shift in Nigeria's economic strategy is expected to stimulate further discussion and debate among stakeholders.
