The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi has expressed strong disapproval over the use of clerical robes by students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, during a recent drama presentation. The performance, intended to mark their graduation, sparked a wave of controversy after images were widely shared on social media.

In a statement released by the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN), Makurdi Diocese, the use of the robes was condemned as "a gross disrespect to the Catholic faith." Hembadoon Orsar, Chairman of the association, criticized the portrayal of the revered Reverend Sisters, emphasizing the inappropriateness of the costumes worn by the students.

“This action sadly represents an attack on the Catholic Church and a mockery of the people’s faith,” the statement read. CAMPAN argued that while creative expression is important, it should not cross boundaries of respect, especially concerning religious symbols and attire.

The statement also highlighted the responsibility of educational institutions to guide students properly, especially when it comes to matters of religion and decency.

The Catholic Diocese hopes this serves as a reminder to respect all faiths and encourages universities to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
