Citation of Professor Musa Muhammad Borodo for the Award of Emeritus Professor

Professor Musa Muhammad Borodo is a distinguished Professor of Medicine, Honorary Consultant Physician, and Gastroenterologist whose career has been defined by excellence in medical education, clinical practice, research, leadership, and public service. He joined the services of Bayero University, Kano, as a Senior Lecturer in 1990 and, through unwavering dedication and academic distinction, attained the prestigious rank of Professor of Medicine in 2013.

During his illustrious career at Bayero University, Professor Borodo served in several key leadership positions, including Head of the Department of Medicine, Acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Acting Chief Medical Director of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AKTH. His visionary leadership contributed immensely to the growth of medical education and healthcare delivery within the University and beyond.

Professor Borodo rendered exceptional service through his membership and chairmanship of numerous strategic committees. He chaired the Bayero University Security Committee, Health Services Committee, Faculty of Medicine Committee on the Review of the MBBS Curriculum and Examination Regulations, Faculty Committee on Integrated Teaching, Strategic Planning Committee, Medical Advisory Committee, and the University Health Services Consultative Committee. He also served as a member of the Bayero University Journals Committee, Faculty of Medicine ECFMG Verification Office, Bayero University Committee on the Collegiate System, and the University Honorary Degrees Award Committee.

Beyond the University, Professor Borodo made remarkable contributions to postgraduate medical education in Nigeria through the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, where he rose to become its National President. As an accomplished academic and mentor, he supervised three Part II Fellowship dissertations and forty postgraduate dissertations for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. Throughout his years of service at Bayero University, he remained committed to patient care at Murtala Muhammed General Hospital, Kano. Even after retirement, he continues to mentor the next generation of specialists and is currently supervising six postgraduate dissertations.

A prolific scholar, Professor Borodo has served as an External Examiner to several universities across Nigeria and has authored sixty-six articles in reputable academic journals alongside thirty-four commissioned scholarly papers, making significant contributions to medical research and knowledge.

His commitment to public service extends beyond academia. Within Kano State, he served as Chairman of the Technical Sub-committee on Health and Environment of the Government Transition Committee, Chairman of the Committee on the Establishment of the MBBS Programme at Northwest University, Kano, Chairman of the Kano State Science and Technical Schools Board, Chairman of the Technical Committee on the Rejuvenation of Ethical Professional Health Standards, Member of the Kano State Advisory Committee of Clinicians on the Way Forward for the Polio Vaccination Initiative, and Member of the Kano State Zakat Committee.

Professor Borodo is a respected member of twelve professional bodies and has received twenty-one national and international awards in recognition of his outstanding contributions to medicine, education, research, and public service. In honour of his enduring legacy, several landmarks bear his name, including a street in Kano, a medical students’ hostel, and a male medical ward at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. His academic and professional engagements have taken him to every continent of the world except Australia.

Professor Musa Muhammad Borodo’s unwavering commitment to scholarship, medical practice, institutional leadership, mentorship, and community service has earned him a place among the most accomplished medical academics in Nigeria. His enduring legacy continues to inspire generations of students, clinicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders.
