COE Akwanga Hosts Environment Commissioner On Oversight And Acresal Inspection Tour

The Provost of the College of Education, Akwanga, Dr. Barnabas Nuhu Barau Best, has received the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Mrs. Margaret Itake Elayo, during an official oversight and environmental inspection visit to the institution.

The Commissioner explained that the visit was aimed at assessing the environmental conditions within the College, identifying potential environmental and security-related challenges, and evaluating the sustainability of existing interventions. 

She noted that the College is among beneficiaries of the Nasarawa State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, ACReSAL, programme, particularly its institutional-strengthening component, which supports ICT/GIS applications, environmental and climate-related research, data generation and capacity development.

According to her, the inspection was also designed to engage the College Management on environmental sustainability, assess ongoing interventions, identify emerging needs, and determine areas where the Ministry and ACReSAL could provide additional technical support. 

The Commissioner further congratulated Dr. Best on his substantive appointment as Provost, describing the appointment as meritorious, while enthusiastically chanting, “ACReSAL, Dr. Best.”

Provost Reaffirms Commitment To Environmental Management  

Responding, Dr. Best expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for the Ministry’s continued interest in the College and for interventions already delivered through the programme. 

He disclosed that upon assumption of office, he inspected the facilities and was informed by the Head of the Department of Geography that the supplied equipment remained intact, while Management was working towards providing adequate security and a conducive environment for their effective utilisation. He, however, identified the Automatic Weather Station as a critical area requiring attention.

The Provost subsequently led the Commissioner and her team on an inspection tour of the designated site where the weather station and related equipment are expected to be installed, reaffirming the College’s commitment to strengthening environmental management, climate resilience and the effective utilisation of ACReSAL-supported interventions.

The Nasarawa State ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Dr. Napoleon Gyobe Elias, was also part of the delegation.
