Concerns Arise as Employers Reject NYSC Corps Members in North-East Region
Recent reports have raised concerns about the rejection of corps members by some employers in the North-East region of Nigeria
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in Nigeria is designed to promote national unity and provide young graduates with the opportunity to serve their country while gaining valuable work experience. However, recent reports have raised concerns about the rejection of corps members by some employers in the North-East region of Nigeria. This issue not only undermines the objectives of the NYSC but also presents challenges to the career prospects of young graduates.
The NYSC program, which was established in 1973, requires Nigerian graduates under the age of 30 to serve in various parts of the country for a duration of one year. This service involves working in schools, government offices, healthcare facilities, and other sectors. The primary goal is to foster national integration by exposing young graduates to different cultures and regions of Nigeria. The North-East region of Nigeria has faced significant challenges in recent years, including insecurity and economic instability due to the insurgency by Boko Haram. These challenges have had a direct impact on the acceptance and integration of NYSC corps members in the region.

One of the major concerns is the rejection of corps members by some employers, both in the public and private sectors, citing security concerns as the primary reason. This unfortunate situation has created a sense of uncertainty among corps members posted to the region and has raised questions about their safety and welfare. The NYSC has not remained silent on this matter. The organization has expressed its concern over the rejection of corps members in the North-East and has called for greater understanding and cooperation from employers in the region. The Director-General of the NYSC, in a statement, emphasized that corps members are not only there to serve but also to learn and contribute positively to their host communities.

The NYSC has also sought the intervention of state governments in the North-East to address the issue. Collaborative efforts between the NYSC, state governments, and employers are crucial to finding a solution that ensures the safety and well-being of corps members while still allowing them to fulfill their national service obligations.
