COOU College of Medicine Hosts MDCN Accreditation Committee Inaugural Sitting
The College of Medicine, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, hosted the inaugural sitting of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) Accreditation Committee, marking a key milestone in the institution’s drive toward full accreditation of its medical programme.
The College of Medicine, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, hosted the inaugural sitting of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) Accreditation Committee, marking a key milestone in the institution’s drive toward full accreditation of its medical programme.

The session, which attracted full participation from relevant stakeholders, brought together key figures in medical education and clinical administration to assess readiness and strengthen compliance with regulatory standards.
Among those present was Prof. Akpuaka, an experienced accreditation expert, who provided guidance based on his extensive background across multiple colleges of medicine. The Director of Clinical Services, Dr. Umedum, also attended, conveying the support and commitment of the Chief Medical Director of COOUTH, Amaku, Awka, to the accreditation process.
Technical oversight was provided by the Dean of Deans, Prof. Osita Chiaghanam, who served as a technical adviser during the deliberations, contributing to the evaluation framework and institutional assessment discussions.
Members of the committee commended the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, describing her as indefatigable and digitally driven. They also referenced her track record in securing successful outcomes in previous NUC accreditation exercises, expressing confidence that the university would replicate similar success in the ongoing MDCN process.
The Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Lawrence Ikeakor, reaffirmed the institution’s preparedness, stating that the college remains committed to meeting all regulatory requirements and standards necessary for full accreditation.

The development is viewed as a significant step in strengthening COOU’s medical training capacity and institutional credibility within Nigeria’s healthcare education landscape.
