Education leaders, including representatives from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), are urging the Federal Government to take decisive action by fully implementing the Safe School Initiative to combat the alarming rise in school abductions.
In a passionate plea, NUT's National President, Mr. Audu Titus-Amba, and NAPPS's National President, Mr. Yomi Odubela, called for urgent measures to protect students and educators following the recent abduction of 287 children from schools in Kaduna State. The leaders emphasized the critical need for comprehensive security measures, including perimeter fencing and dedicated security personnel, to safeguard educational institutions across the nation.

Their call for action comes amidst growing concerns over the safety of schools in conflict-prone areas, with the abduction in Kaduna State marking one of the largest incidents since the infamous 2014 Chibok girls kidnapping. Despite previous government initiatives, such as the Safe School Financing Plan, significant gaps in protection remain, leaving thousands of schools vulnerable to attacks by bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers.
NUT and NAPPS leaders underscored the importance of collaboration between government officials and education stakeholders to develop and implement effective security strategies. They urged the inclusion of teachers in policy discussions, emphasizing their invaluable insights into school security needs and challenges.

The leaders also highlighted the human toll of school abductions, noting the devastating impact on students, families, and communities. While recent reports suggest the release of some abducted children, concerns persist regarding the whereabouts of those still missing.
As Nigeria grapples with the ongoing threat of school abductions, NUT and NAPPS are calling on the government to prioritize the safety and security of students and educators by taking concrete steps to implement the Safe School Initiative without delay.
