The 11th Federation of All Africa University Sports (FASU) Games Scientific Conference 2024, hosted by Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), highlighted the role of sports in promoting unity, healthy competition, and excellence among African universities.

The 11th Federation of All Africa University Sports (FASU) Games Scientific Conference 2024, held at Lagos State University (LASU), emphasized the unifying power of sports within African universities. The event underscored the role of sports in promoting unity, healthy competition, and global excellence among African youths.

Co-hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and LASU, the FASU Games feature participation from 11 countries, including Angola, Egypt, Ghana, Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Kenya, Mauritius, Uganda, and Guinea. These nations are represented by various universities that are competing in the week-long event, which began with an opening ceremony marked by a spirit of camaraderie.

Themed “Fostering Unity, Healthy Competition, and Global Excellence through University Sports,” the conference highlighted the significant role FASU plays in harnessing the athletic potential of African youth within tertiary institutions. The event served as a platform to showcase exceptional talent and academic prowess, fostering a cross-cultural environment that transcends regional and national boundaries.

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, warmly welcomed attendees, highlighting how the FASU Games inspire innovation and best practices in sports. She emphasized that university sports can bridge divides and promote unity by eradicating divisive tendencies across Africa.

UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, noted that the competition aims to reshape the landscape of sports in African universities. She stressed that FASU provides a platform for students to engage in healthy competition, fostering teamwork, integrity, and essential qualities for future generations.

Secretary General of FASU, Prof. Grace Olagunju, described the conference as a testament to FASU’s dedication to unity and excellence. She praised the contributions of the scientific and educational committees in advancing the games and nurturing athletes within the academic community.

President of the National University Games Association (NUGA), Prof. Bawa Mohammed, outlined FASU’s commitment to addressing key challenges in sports competitions across Africa, aiming to propose viable solutions through a communique.

Keynote speaker, Lotus Bank Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Kalifat Araoye, highlighted the transformative power of sports as a universal language that connects individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. She stressed the inclusive nature of university sports in promoting unity, healthy competition, and global excellence.
