The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, advocated for the scrapping of the Higher National Diploma (HND) to address what he termed as a professional war with university degrees. He suggested revisiting the recommendations of the Conference of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in 2017.
Additionally, the President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Shammah Kpanja, emphasized the importance of transitioning HND to BTech to enhance the attractiveness of polytechnics. Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Prof. Idris Bugaje, lamented the discrimination faced by HND holders and called for urgent action to address the issue.
