FULOKOJA Welcomes NUC Accreditation Team for Medical Programme Evaluation
Federal University Lokoja hosted the NUC's accreditation team for its medical programme evaluation, marking a milestone in the institution's quest to advance medical education in Kogi State and beyond.
The Federal University Lokoja (FULOKOJA) has taken a significant step forward in its medical education journey as it welcomed a delegation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the accreditation of its Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB;BS) programme.
The visit, led by Professor Kabiru Sabitu, a renowned public health expert, marks a critical phase for FULOKOJA's College of Health Sciences, established in 2021 under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Olayemi Akinwumi. The college has grown rapidly, admitting its first cohort in 2022 and currently enrolling its third set of students.
In his address, Professor Akinwumi emphasized the importance of the MB;BS programme, noting its role in addressing the admission challenges faced by Kogi State indigenes and the critical need for medical professionals amid a national healthcare workforce exodus. Despite the financial demands, the Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence in the programme's prospects, highlighting substantial investments made to meet accreditation standards.
The visiting team commended the university's management for its visionary leadership and efforts in developing the medical programme. Professor Sabitu praised the VC's dedication and expressed optimism about the outcome of their evaluation.
The Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Mike Ogirima, and Registrar, Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, extended their gratitude to the NUC team, underscoring the potential benefits of the accreditation exercise for FULOKOJA, Kogi State, and the nation.
As the team continues its appraisal, FULOKOJA remains optimistic that the accreditation will further position the university as a hub for quality medical education in Nigeria.
