Federal Government to Split Unity Colleges into Basic and Secondary Schools

The Federal Government has announced plans to restructure Nigeria's 115 Federal Unity Colleges by separating them into basic and secondary schools. This move, aligned with the National Policy on Education, aims to improve infrastructure, enhance teachers' welfare, increase funding, and create more employment opportunities.

In a bid to enhance Nigeria's educational landscape, the Federal Government has unveiled plans to divide the nation's 115 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) into distinct basic and secondary schools. The restructuring aims to align with the National Policy on Education (NPE) and is expected to significantly boost infrastructure, increase funding, and improve teachers' welfare in these schools.

This development was announced by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, during the Annual General Meeting of Principals of Unity Colleges held in Abuja. According to Dr. Sununu, the division will also create more employment opportunities and improve the overall functionality of the colleges.

Dr. Sununu stressed the importance of incorporating entrepreneurship education into the curriculum, positioning it as a key tool for reducing unemployment and fostering self-reliance among Nigerian students.

Furthermore, he called on the principals to work together to address social vices, maintain school infrastructure, and foster positive relations with their host communities to ensure growth and security.

In her remarks, Dr. Idowu Akinbamijo, Chairperson of the Principals of Unity Schools, highlighted that the meeting was geared towards setting an agenda for the upcoming academic year and strengthening the leadership capacity of the principals.
