The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has secured approval from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Abuja, for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Cyber Sciences (ARCS).

The approval, conveyed in a letter dated 27 April 2026 and signed by the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny S. T. Echono, confirms a special intervention grant valued at ₦3 billion for the development of the centre.
According to the university, the intervention is designed to support advanced research, innovation, and capacity development in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Sciences, all of which are increasingly central to global technological transformation and digital economies.
The management of the university described the approval as a major institutional milestone, noting that it strengthens the institution’s strategic ambition to position itself as a hub for technological innovation, digital transformation, and applied research in Nigeria and beyond.
The Centre of Excellence is expected to function as a multidisciplinary platform for research collaboration, technological development, and training in emerging fields. It will also support efforts to address national development challenges while contributing to manpower development in advanced digital technologies.

The university further stated that the initiative aligns with broader national objectives aimed at building a knowledge-driven economy and strengthening Nigeria’s competitiveness in science and technology innovation.
The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja expressed appreciation to TETFund for the confidence placed in the institution, assuring that the university would ensure transparent, accountable, and efficient management of the intervention in line with established guidelines.
He added that the establishment of the centre would significantly expand the university’s research capacity and enhance its role in producing skilled professionals equipped to meet the demands of emerging global technologies.
The project is expected to place the Federal University Lokoja among key institutions driving innovation in artificial intelligence and cyber sciences within the country’s higher education landscape.
