Foundation Grants Scholarships to Girls in FCT Slum for International Day of the Girl Child
The Girls Beyond Reach Foundation, popularly known as Daddy's Girls, a non-governmental organization, has extended a helping hand to girls residing in the Angwan-Shao, Karimo, a slum in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This generous act is in commemoration of the International Day of the Girl Child.
Mrs. Olamide Afolabi, the Director of Finance for the foundation, revealed that they have awarded educational scholarships amounting to N2 million to deserving candidates. This initiative is aimed at providing opportunities for these girls to pursue their dreams and overcome the socio-economic challenges that often hinder their progress.
Each recipient will be granted N150,000 per session for a duration of four to five years, contingent on their chosen course of study.
"We have observed an educational disparity among the girl-child, and we are committed to bridging that gap. Currently, the scholarship is awarded to three girls in Karimo, Abuja, as this is the extent of our financial capacity. We do not want to disappoint any of them due to budget constraints. The selected girls will receive N150,000 per session, and this support will continue for four to five years, depending on the length of their academic programs," Afolabi explained.
Temitope Omogbolagun, the Director of Operations for the Foundation, highlighted the foundation's commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through education. She emphasized the importance of bridging the gender gap in education, especially in a country where a significant number of children, notably girls, are out of school.

She stated, "In Nigeria, according to UNICEF, over 10 million children are out of school, with 60 percent of them being girls. Our aim is to narrow this gap. Furthermore, we firmly believe that education is the foundation for a brighter future. By investing in these girls, we are not only transforming their lives but also contributing to the progress of our society as a whole."
Omogbolagun also disclosed that the selection process for the scholarship recipients was rigorous, with candidates assessed based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and their dedication to community development.

"The three chosen beneficiaries, including an ambitious young lady with physical challenges, exhibited remarkable promise and an unwavering commitment to overcoming adversity," she added.
Mrs. Tomisin Latinwo, the Director of Mentoring, expressed the Foundation's ongoing commitment to creating lasting impact in the lives of underprivileged individuals. She stated, "As these three determined young women, along with those already on our scholarship and mentoring program, embark on their educational journey, they serve as beacons of hope for countless others in similar circumstances. With the right support, barriers can be overcome, and dreams can be realized. Daddy's Girls has set a commendable example for philanthropy and empowerment, demonstrating that every investment in education is an investment in a brighter future for all. We hope that other non-governmental organizations will follow suit because, together, we can make a significant difference."
