From Four WAEC Attempts to First-Class Honors: The Extraordinary Resilience of UNICAL’s First Female SUG President, Blessing Alims

In a narrative of pure grit and academic excellence, Comrade Blessing Alims has officially concluded her undergraduate journey at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), leaving behind a legacy that has redefined student leadership in Nigeria.

Blessing, who is set to celebrate her final graduation ceremony on April 10, 2026, gained national attention for the "victory lap" inscribed on her graduation outfit. Her path to success was anything but linear, marked by four attempts at WAEC and four sittings for JAMB before securing admission in 2020.

Beyond her personal academic hurdles, Blessing made institutional history in 2024 by becoming the first-ever female President of the UNICAL Student Union Government (SUG). Her tenure was characterized by a rare balance of high-stakes advocacy and rigorous academic focus.

A Double Triumph: Leadership and Scholarship

Proving that student politics and academic brilliance can coexist, Blessing graduated with First-Class Honors in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution.

"Her journey stands as proof that delays are not denials, and that consistency can rewrite any story," noted student advocate Adam Syte. "She didn’t just attend school; she made history."

Blessing’s story has become a beacon of inspiration for Nigerian students, demonstrating that resilience and leadership can turn initial setbacks into a record-breaking career.
