The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has strengthened its position as a leading innovation hub in Africa following the successful hosting of the G-SPARK Summit 1.0, a student-led technology event focused on agriculture, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and emerging digital solutions.

The summit, held on April 25, 2026, at the University’s Ceremonial Building, carried the theme “Showcasing Talents, Scaling Impact” and attracted over 1,000 participants from across Nigeria, placing FUNAAB at the center of national conversations on agritech innovation and digital transformation.
According to a statement by the Ag. Head, Directorate of Public Relations, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide, the event was organized by the Google Developer Groups (GDG) on FUNAAB campus and demonstrated the growing role of students and young innovators in addressing agricultural productivity, food security, and sustainability challenges through technology.
The summit featured technical workshops, innovation showcases, networking sessions, and hackathon-style engagements designed to provide participants with practical, career-relevant skills in AI, Machine Learning (ML), and agritech development.

Organizers noted that collaboration between FUNAAB, the Ogun State tech ecosystem, and global technology companies such as Google and NVIDIA contributed to the success of the event, strengthening the university’s link with international innovation networks.
To encourage broad participation, the organizers also provided a 40 percent transportation subsidy for students traveling from outside Ogun State, enabling wider representation from tertiary institutions across the country. The venue was equipped with high-speed internet infrastructure and production facilities to support live demonstrations and collaborative technical work.
While the event recorded significant success, organizers acknowledged operational challenges related to large-scale crowd management and limited hardware availability during practical sessions. Plans have already been initiated for G-SPARK Summit 2.0, which is expected to include partnerships with global hardware manufacturers to introduce device-lending support for participants.
The summit has been widely viewed as evidence of the increasing influence of African universities in shaping the continent’s digital and innovation ecosystem, particularly at the intersection of agriculture and technology.

The Lead Organizer, Mr. Yusuff Ahmad, speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, expressed appreciation to the university management for its support, describing the initiative as a bold step toward showcasing the innovative capacity of African students on a global stage.
