The Federal University of Technology, Akure’s Department of Forestry and Wood Technology is demonstrating the aesthetic and practical value of wood in modern office design, thanks to the vision of its Head of Department, Professor Johnathan Onyekwelu.

During an interview at the department, Professor Onyekwelu highlighted how carefully selected wood species—including iroko, masonia, and afara—were used to craft doors, wall panels, tables, ceiling panels, clocks, and door signposts, creating an office environment that is both visually appealing and highly durable.
He noted that the department’s office fittings, installed over twenty years ago, remain fresh and intact, proving the longevity of well-processed wood. The durability, he explained, stems from the use of high-quality wood species and proper treatment techniques that protect against insect damage and natural deterioration.
“Using wood sustainably is forest management. Wood is the most important of all forest products. Man cannot live without trees; the day the last tree is cut, the last man dies,” Professor Onyekwelu said, emphasizing the importance of responsible tree management.
The professor further noted that wood panels are not only eco-friendly but also cost-effective compared to conventional paint, which often requires frequent maintenance. Beyond aesthetics, trees contribute to human survival by providing oxygen, regulating temperature, and enhancing environmental beauty.

Professor Onyekwelu described the departmental office as a practical showcase of the versatility, environmental benefits, and sustainable use of wood-based materials, demonstrating how forest resources can be responsibly harnessed for long-term utility and ecological balance.
