FUTMinna Strengthens Research Commercialization with Intellectual Property and Patent Workshop
The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna) is intensifying its drive towards innovation and research commercialization through increased awareness on intellectual property protection and patent development.
At the 2026 Joint Faculty-Based Workshop on Intellectual Property and Patent Drafting held on Monday, July 13, 2026, academic staff and postgraduate students were equipped with practical knowledge on patent drafting, intellectual property management, and technology commercialization. The workshop was organized by the Directorate of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer (DIPTT).
The Director of DIPTT, Professor Jimoh O. Tijani, disclosed that FUT Minna has increased its patented innovations from 5 patents before November 2024 to 25 patents. He stressed the University’s commitment to transforming research into market-ready products and technologies, and encouraged researchers to protect their inventions before publication to enhance commercialization opportunities.

Participants also received hands-on training from Dr. Oluwafemi Adebayo Oyewole, who explained the step-by-step process of preparing quality patent applications. Dr. Oyewole emphasized that protecting research outputs is essential for attracting investment, fostering industry collaboration, and driving national development.
The workshop reflects FUT Minna’s continued commitment to building an innovation ecosystem where research delivers practical solutions, creates economic value, and contributes meaningfully to sustainable national development.
