Miona Shorts, a determined and trailblazing young woman, has etched her name in history by becoming the first-ever black woman to earn a bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
With her Bachelor of Science degree in Astrophysics, Miona not only shattered barriers as the inaugural Astrophysics graduate of the university but also became only the second black woman to graduate in the institution’s storied history.

Reflecting on her groundbreaking achievement, Miona expressed both overwhelming emotion and profound gratitude. She revealed that she stumbled upon the historical significance of her accomplishment during her first year, prompting her to delve into the university's archives to validate the milestone.
The numerical alignment of her graduation, exactly 100 years after the first black woman graduated from the university, left Miona awe-inspired. She remarked on the beauty of this alignment while acknowledging the enduring challenges faced by black individuals in the United States.
Miona’s passion for astronomy traces back to her childhood days in Chicago, where she dreamed of exploring the cosmos. Inspired by a Kraft cheese commercial featuring a cow jumping over the moon, she harbored aspirations of venturing among the stars from a tender age.
Fuelled by determination and unwavering support from her mother, Miona embarked on her journey to pursue her childhood dream. Her steadfast resolve led her to accomplish remarkable feats, including meeting her idol, renowned astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson, during her time at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSI).

Furthermore, Miona's commitment to academic excellence and artistic expression earned her the prestigious First Wave/MC Lyte Scholarship. This four-year, full-tuition scholarship celebrates students who excel academically while nurturing their artistic talents.
Looking ahead, Miona envisions a future brimming with possibilities. Alongside her astronomical pursuits, she harbors entrepreneurial ambitions, intending to launch her hair care and beauty brand, "Shukrah." Rooted in her childhood experiences and passions, Shukrah embodies Miona's entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation.
