KASU holds its maiden International Research Culture Conference

The SA to the Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University on Research Culture, and Convener Prof. Hauwa'u E. Yusuf has organised a maiden International Research Culture Conference. 

The conference opening ceremony took place on Tuesday, 5th September 2023, with the theme: The Dawn of Intellectual Paralysis, Towards Cultivating a Resilient Research Culture. 

The Keynote Speaker, Prof. Toyin Falola, Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas at Austin, spoke on the topic: Intellectual Rejuvenation and Sustainable Research Culture. 

He advised the University's Management to set up information centres and turn products of research into monetary benefits. He went further to suggest that incentives and rewards be given to hardworking researchers, thereby encouraging commitment and dedication. 

Prof. Falola said that the culture of stimulating originality and thought is to be sustained and synergy be enabled between the KASU and its alumni to move the university forward. 

The keynote speaker concluded by saying that the benefits will accelerate innovation, and enhance the university's visibility and reputation. 

The Lead Paper Presenter and Director of Laboratory Management and Maintenance, Prof. Timothy Bulus spoke on the Value of the Innovation Nexus of Sustainable Research Culture. 

The Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University and Chief Host, Prof. Abdullahi I. Musa, remarked that KASU aspires to be a leading institution regionally and globally in research excellence in all parameters of sustainable development.

Prof. Musa said that the transfer of knowledge must follow scientific procedures. He said 'Only passion to discover will motivate scholars to conduct research.

'In KASU, instilling a passion for conducting research is a priority, to promote a culture in research, funds have been earmarked for scholars to solve societal problems.'   

The VC concluded his remarks by saying the journey to academic excellence at KASU has just begun.

The Co-Host of the conference as well as the Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, expressed his delight to be associated with the epoch-making event. He said the topic was apt and participants would leave richer than they came.

Ochefu spoke about TeRAS which is supported by TETFund and contains the largest collection of dematerialized thesis (postgraduate, undergraduate, and final year projects) and delivers the broadest coverage of services for tertiary education research and learning, fostering a vibrant ecosystem that drives innovation and supports the diverse needs of students, researchers and institutions within the tertiary education landscape. 

He added that federating with the TeRAS repository gives bidirectional access to content and synchronized across research repositories from participating institutions. KASU will shake hands with other institutions and gain access to over 2 billion thesis and academic work. 

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor,  Academic, Prof. Yusha'u Ango, said that Management is identifying and harnessing talents. The country needs research to develop and make remarkable achievements like other developed nations. 

Adding his voice, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration, Prof. Muhammad Bashir Ali said the theme of the conference is related as it touches on one of the areas the current administration is interested in. He urged the participants to be attentive as the benefit is invaluable. 

The Registrar, Samira Balarabe, Esq commended the Convener, Prof. H. E. Yusuf and congratulated her for successfully organising the conference. 

Prof. Ntim Esew also said that research will solve societal ills and the conference is the right step in the right direction.
