Kebbi Students Set Provost’s Residence On Fire Over Alleged N23m Extortion

Students at the College of Health Sciences and Technology in Jega, Kebbi State, expressed their outrage by setting fire to the residence of Provost Haruna Saidu-Sauwa and vandalizing his vehicle amid allegations of a N23 million extortion scheme involving index registration fees.

The unrest erupted after students accused the college management of demanding an exorbitant amount related to index registration for 250 graduating students. Reports indicate that this controversy stemmed from a newly launched public health program, originally affiliated with Reproductive Health and the Public Health Association of Nigeria. In an effort to gain certification, the college merged this program with the Environmental Health Department, leading to an additional charge of N65,000 for each student, on top of the already paid N30,000.
