Kwara State University Clarifies that Police Shooting Victim Was Not a Current Student

Kwara State University (KWASU) has clarified that Suleiman Olayinka, the young man killed by police in Ilorin last Tuesday, was not a current student. The university confirmed he had voluntarily withdrawn from his studies in the 2018/2019 academic session.

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has officially clarified that Suleiman Olayinka, the young man tragically killed by police in Ilorin last Tuesday, was not a current student of the institution. The university issued a statement in response to media reports, confirming that Olayinka had withdrawn from the university since the 2018/2019 academic session.

In a statement released by the Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, the university clarified that Olayinka, who was once a student in the Department of Statistics, had voluntarily withdrawn from his studies in the 200 level several years ago.

“Records at the university indicate that Aiyeyemi Suleiman Olayinka withdrew from the institution in the 2018/2019 session,” Dr. Aliyu stated. “We deeply sympathize with the family of the deceased and pray that God grants them the strength to bear this loss."

Olayinka was reportedly under investigation for breach of trust and cheating at the time of his death. The tragic incident, which occurred in the Tanke area of Ilorin, has drawn widespread attention, with the Kwara State Police Command confirming the ongoing investigation into the matter. Three police officers involved in the shooting have since been arrested and detained.
