Lagos State Government Defends School Fees Hike, Citing Student Welfare

The Lagos State Government has defended its decision to increase boarding fees in its model colleges, stating that the rise is essential for ensuring better student welfare. In a statement released on Monday, Mr. Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, addressed concerns over the recently approved fee hike. The new boarding fee, set at N100,000, marks a significant increase from the previous N35,000 that had been in place since 2021.

Lawal emphasized that the adjustment was necessary, given the current economic conditions. "The previous boarding fee of N35,000, in effect since 2021, is no longer realistic in 2024," Lawal stated. "This decision, though challenging, prioritizes the welfare and overall experience of our students."

The new fees will come into effect for the 2024/2025 academic session, which commenced on September 15, 2024. Lawal explained that the boarding fees cover essential services, including feeding, janitorial services, and other miscellaneous costs associated with maintaining the hostel environment.

The Ministry acknowledges the dissenting opinions from some parents but maintains that the fee increase is a necessary step to enhance the quality of education and facilities provided to students. "Enrolling a child in a boarding school is a personal choice, and parents are expected to cover the boarding fees," Lawal added.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring that the increased fees contribute directly to the improved welfare of students and the overall quality of education in its model colleges.
