LASU Mathematics Department Hosts Freshers' Orientation and Scholarship Award Ceremony
The Department of Mathematics at Lagos State University (LASU) hosted its Freshers' Orientation and Scholarship Award Ceremony on January 28, 2025, at the S.L. EDU Hall, LASU Main Campus.
The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University (LASU), hosted a successful Freshers' Orientation and Scholarship Award Ceremony on Tuesday, 28th January 2025. The event took place at the S.L. EDU Hall, Faculty of Science, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos, and was attended by an impressive mix of new students, alumni, academic staff, and distinguished guests.
The ceremony aimed to welcome first-year students into the Mathematics department and celebrate academic excellence by presenting scholarships to deserving students. The event was graced by representatives from the university's leadership, with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, represented by Prof. Olufemi Adigun-Lawal, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. In her speech, the Vice-Chancellor expressed her admiration for the Mathematics department and encouraged the freshers to stay focused and resilient in their academic journey. She praised the contributions of the department's lecturers, including Prof. Moses Akanbi, Dr. Ashiribo Wusu, and Dr. Aminat Ige, and reminded the students that Mathematics plays a vital role in solving real-world problems.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Moses Akanbi, Dean of the Faculty of Science, who highlighted the importance of determination for success in the first year and beyond. He illustrated how Mathematics can address real-life challenges, from optimizing bread production to understanding human body measurements, and concluded with a prayer for the students' success.
Dr. A.L. Olutimo, Head of the Mathematics Department, also spoke during the event, offering words of encouragement to the new students and stressing the various career opportunities available to graduates of Mathematics. He proudly showcased successful alumni excelling in diverse global industries, urging students to fully seize the opportunities at LASU.
The ceremony also featured Dr. A.S. Wusu, a senior lecturer in the department, who outlined important academic policies and expectations, including CGPA calculation, graduation requirements, and the significance of class attendance and integrity.
In a key highlight of the event, Dr. (Mrs) Aminat Ige, Chairperson of the organizing committee and a representative of the alumni sponsors, announced the recipients of the 2023/2024 scholarship awards. Each recipient received a scholarship of N70,000 and certificates of recognition for their outstanding academic performance. Other students were also presented with knowledge-packed souvenirs to inspire them in their studies.
The event concluded with a lively Question and Answer session, where past heads of the department and faculty members addressed students' inquiries, fostering an atmosphere of learning and engagement.
Dr. (Mrs) Ige delivered the closing remarks, thanking all participants, sponsors, and guests for their contributions to the event's success, marking a significant milestone in the academic journey of the freshers. The Mathematics Department expressed its gratitude to everyone who made the event memorable and impactful.
