LASWA Trains 50 Pupils in Swimming and Water Safety

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has trained 50 pupils from public schools in the Bariga/Somolu axis in swimming and water safety as part of the Lagos Water Savvy Kid’s Programme. The week-long initiative aimed to enhance the safety of riverine school children by equipping them with essential skills.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has successfully trained 50 pupils from public schools in the Bariga/Somolu axis as part of its Lagos Water Savvy Kid’s Programme. This year’s initiative, which spanned a week, aimed to equip young learners with essential swimming skills and water safety knowledge, thereby enhancing the safety of riverine school children.

The training took place at the Bloomgrey Pool in Gbagada, where LASWA’s General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, underscored the Lagos State Government's commitment to ensuring the safety of waterway users, especially school children. He highlighted the agency's ongoing efforts to provide life jackets and comprehensive boating education to riverine schools.

During the event's closing ceremony, Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stressed the critical role of water safety education in minimizing accidents and promoting sustainable transportation. He noted that this initiative aligns with the state’s Transportation Master Plan, which seeks to enhance water transport safety and efficiency.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, called for increased community engagement and collaboration to create a safer and more inclusive water transportation system. He urged parents and community leaders to support the initiative, emphasizing that collective efforts are essential for the program's success.

This initiative is part of LASWA's broader commitment to improving water safety and awareness among school children, ensuring a safer environment for all waterway users in Lagos State.
