Edo State Government has once again demonstrated its commitment to fostering collaboration with relevant agencies within and outside the state, aiming to enhance digital and financial literacy among women and minority groups.
The welcome address at a one-day workshop on digital and financial literacy for women and minority groups in the South-South Zone of Nigeria was delivered by Yuwa Naps, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy, Science, and Technology. This workshop, held in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University and Igbinedion University, Okada, emphasized the need for women in Edo State to embrace cutting-edge technological practices in conducting their business transactions effectively. Naps highlighted that acquiring basic technological skills is crucial for mothers to succeed in their endeavors.
Naps stated, “Being technologically savvy will give you a competitive edge in facing potential financial challenges. The world has surpassed using social media solely for entertainment purposes. It is crucial to leverage basic tech tools to manage our finances and businesses effectively, which is why this workshop is highly relevant.”
Representing Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye, the Vice Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Dr. Ozor Patience expressed that the collaboration for the workshop was born out of research conducted at Igbinedion University. The research revealed a lack of knowledge among most Edo women regarding business transactions and basic operations on mobile and online platforms. Therefore, collaboration with the Edo State Government through the Ministry of Digital Economy, Science, and Technology became imperative.
During the workshop, Mrs. Evelyn Nekpen Imode, the Head of Trade Promotions and Digital Marketing at the Ministry of Business Trade and Cooperatives, delivered a lecture on “Money and Transaction.” She emphasized that acquiring fundamental skills in financial and digital literacy empowers individuals to make informed financial decisions in the digital age.
Furthermore, Arabome Eboseremen Joy, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Edo State Transformation and Enhancement Project (EdoSTEP) at the Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, delivered an insightful lecture on financial management and goal setting. Her lecture aimed to provide participants with practical approaches to achieving financial stability and independence.
The workshop not only underscored the significance of digital and financial literacy but also demonstrated the Edo State Government’s commitment to equipping women and minority groups with essential skills for personal and professional growth.
