In a bid to enhance safety and maintain orderliness within the campus vicinity, the Management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has announced the prohibition of commercial motorcycle (okada) operations within the university premises.

The decision was relayed by Prof. Magnus Igboekwe, Director of the Centre for Project Development and Revenue Generation, during the inauguration of a new Keke Loading Bay within the institution for registered commercial tricycle (keke) owners. Prof. Igboekwe cited the disruptive nature of commercial motorcyclists' activities within the university environment as a significant concern leading to the ban.

Effective immediately, all private motorcyclists intending to access the MOUAU campus must possess a valid identity card for entry, while tricycle (Keke) operators are required to register with the MOUAU transportation service and utilize the designated loading bay to ensure orderliness.

Failure to adhere to these directives will result in penalties, with violators facing fines starting from ₦10,000 or more for the retrieval of their vehicles. Sir Alex Okafor, the Chief Security Officer of the University, reiterated the strict enforcement of the ban, emphasizing disciplinary measures for any individuals found contravening the order.

In response to the new regulations, Ekom Smith, Chairman of MOUAU Transport Services, expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, for his support amidst challenging economic conditions.

He commended Prof. Magnus Igboekwe for facilitating communication between tricyclists and the University Management, ensuring the smooth continuity of their business operations. Smith reassured that all members would adhere to the prescribed guidelines governing their activities within the campus premises.

The security unit has pledged full support to the enforcement task force to ensure strict compliance with the new directives, guaranteeing a safer and more organized environment for all members of the MOUAU community.
