The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) has commenced the sale of premium fresh and smoked catfish at affordable prices as part of efforts to boost food production and strengthen agricultural enterprise.
The initiative aligns with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa, to promote sustainable agriculture and enhance food security through the University's commercial agricultural ventures.
The catfish, produced by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management, are available to members of the University community and the general public.
Speaking with Agri-Voice and MOUAU News, the Head of the Department, Professor Anyaele Uka, said the University's fish farm is committed to producing wholesome, hygienically processed, and high-quality fish products.
He explained that catfish, tilapia, and other fish species are raised using best aquaculture practices to ensure freshness, excellent taste, and high nutritional value. He added that some fish species are also cultivated to support the ornamental fish industry.

According to the University, fresh catfish is being sold at ₦4,300 per kilogram, while customers purchasing 10 kilograms or more will enjoy a discounted rate of ₦4,000 per kilogram.
The fish farm also offers carefully processed smoked catfish, valued for its rich flavour, high nutritional content, and longer shelf life.
MOUAU further disclosed that increased production of maggots for fish feed by the College of Natural Resources and Environmental Management is expected to sustain higher fish production and ensure a steady supply of fresh, hygienically processed, and affordable fish products to meet growing consumer demand.
