NANS Announces Nationwide Shutdown to Protest Fuel Price Hike and NNPC Leadership
This protest is in response to recent increases in fuel prices and allegations of mismanagement by the Director General of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a planned nationwide shutdown of all major cities in Nigeria, set to begin on September 15, 2024. This protest is in response to recent increases in fuel prices and allegations of mismanagement by the Director General of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari.
In a statement released on September 4, 2024, NANS expressed deep dissatisfaction with the ongoing fuel price hikes, which they argue have caused significant hardship for the general populace. The organization is demanding an immediate reversal of the fuel price increase and the removal of Mr. Kyari from his position.
NANS is calling on students across the country to participate in the shutdown and occupy major cities on the designated date. The group has assured that the protest will be conducted peacefully and lawfully.
The announcement has been communicated to key officials, including the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, the Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Chief of Defence Staff, and all state governors. NANS has emphasized the need for maintaining order during the protest.
